Eastern Early Music Forum and The York Waits present:
The White Rose and The Red
A workshop for voices and instruments tutored by Tim Bayley & Deborah Catterall
8th November 2014, from 11.30am until 5.00pm
Firstsite, Lewis Gardens, High Street, Colchester, Essex, CO1 1JH.
The York Waits take their name from the ancient city band of York, which like many towns, employed them as the Lord Mayor of the city’s own band of musicians, paid and liveried by the corporation to play on public occasions. Today’s York Waits have revived the band as it was in its heyday in the 15th-17th centuries, playing a wide repertoire of period European music as well as their own arrangements of popular dance and ballad tunes.
The Waits, along with singer Deborah Catterall, have been exploring late 15th century repertoire from the time of the cosmopolitan court of Richard III, from Chansons and Quodlibets to dance tunes from the English Gresley Manuscript. There is a vast musical repertoire to enjoy, whether sung or played upon strings or winds. This workshop (at A440) is open to singers and players of instruments of the period who will work both together and separately. If you are a loud wind player please also bring a quieter instrument with you to play in the tutti pieces.
The workshop will run from 11.30am to 5pm. Drinks and lunch can be obtained from Firstsite's MUSA cafe, or the town centre, which is only a couple of minutes walk away. The nearest public parking is on Roman Road. The cost for the day will be £18.00 for members of EEMF and other Fora, or £20.00 for non-members. (NB: the annual subscription for EEMF is only £8!) The York Waits are also performing their concert programme "The White Rose and the Red" at 7.30pm at The Parish Church of St James the Great. Ticket prices are £12, £9 concessions and to workshop participants. Concert tickets are available from firstname.lastname@example.org or on the door.
